We will be replacing the cracked D-valve packing nut (aka big job) with the freshly machined one, courtesy of our friend Bob @ B&B Steam Restoration. We are also very exited about our new steam powered water pump. We are going to begin the process of a full restoration. There are lots of little jobs as well so please don’t be concerned about skill level! I guarantee everyone that can make it will be put to good use!

»September 30 @11AM: KSW Workday @ NIMBY, Oakland. Map It?
You missed the playa dust, didn't you? In preparation for a possible appearance at BM Decompression, the Engine and the Tender need a good cleaning, along with a few repairs. We would like to get the pinstriping done on the Tender, repair our broken spoke, replace pump packing, etc. If you think you can make it, please let me (Zak) know so I can plan appropriately. We will be working most of the day, so come by when you can. Most work will occur around the middle of the day, so if you were at NIMBY by 11 or noon that would be great!
»September 21, KSW Cocktails @ Pacific Coast Brewing Company, Oakland. 8PM onward.
All right gang, Friends of Steam, Amigos del Vapor, time to get together, relax, and knock back a few cold ones. Pacific Coast Brewing in Oakland is the place (906 Washington St., Oakland 94607) . Please bring any photos from the desert you may have or good stories, especially ones we may not have yet heard. We plan to discuss Burning Man Decompression possibilities, as well as some exciting project ideas for the Fall & Winter.
»August 26 - September 4, BRC, NV. Photos!
KSW will be out under the sun and stars in the Black Rock Desert, with its gorgeous new canopy, providing steam power for BRC’s first Steam Sauna (*operated at night), smaller kinetic art projects, and The Goes Around Comes Around Carousel. It will also pull it's newly fabricated fiery Tender when the Steam Engine’s cruising the playa at its leisurely top speed of 2.5 MPH, offering rides in the self same pulled vehicle. When not in motion, the Steam Engine will be living at Camp Carp.
»August 19-20, Playa Preview! @ NIMBY, Oakland. Map It? 1PM onward (aka the Afternoon).
Miss us at the Fire Arts Festival, not going to Burning Man this year, perhaps you are going to BM and just love steam soooo much that you cannot live (can not live!) without a little taste or Kinetic Steam Works latest and greatest? .... We will be lighting off and running the Case through a bunch of tests and trials. The Engine's newly fabricated Canopy will debut (it's a truly gorgeous, functional, sun dampening piece of art). The less newly fabricated, but still wet behind the flame cannons Steam Tender will be present (beautifully built from scratch in record time). For the first time, we'll be belting up and running the The Goes Around Comes Around Carousel and the "dingus" (aka the PTO for the Carousel). *Note: This is not a performance as such. Basically it's an afternoon of testing, dialing in, driving around, usability oversight, practicing putting on and off the drive belt, testing steam lines for the Sauna, checking out the Carousel, etc. Obviously if every thing's operating properly, there will be opportunities to check it all out from a near vantage and possibly, just maybe, ride the Carousel(!) and Tender. Hope to see you there!
»July 12-16, Fire Arts Festival @ The Crucible, Oakland, CA. Photos!
Fire, more fire, performances, interactive art, flames, poofers, flame cannons, poi, burning, immolations, conflagrations, blazes and ART! What could be better? We've been working hard to prepare for the Crucible's Fire Arts Festival and it'll be the debut for Sean O. & Crew's Steam Tender.
»July 12, Desert Arts Preview @ The Crucible, Oakland, CA. 7PM - 11PM.
KSW is scheduled to present from 8:15-8:25. The official website has this to say: "$teven Ra$pa will be Master of Ceremonies, and members of Burning Man's Art Council will speak about the theme this year and some of the amazing art you can look forward to encountering at Burning Man." Free.
»June 23rd @ NOON, The Crucible. Tender fabrication & Fire Effects: Contact us if you'd like to help!
We started fabrication on the tender last Tuesday. We've got a big workday this Friday the 23rd starting at noon (meeting @ The Crucible). We could really use some help on the fabrication side of the frame. We'll be finishing off the frame and mounting the new leaf springs and axle. I also could use some help with the poofers (flame cannons) which will be mounted on the rear of the tender and operated by the Tender Tender. Come on down to The Crucible this friday.
»Steam Up #2: Saturday 17, 9AM @ NIMBY, 1649 28th Street, Emeryville, CA. Photos!
»KSW Firewood Fiesta! Saturday, May 6th @ 11 AM in Fruitvale.
THANKS to all who came out in the Service of Art to chop out their aggressions on real... wood. Yes, that's right, Log, splitting, cutting, stacking, and loading of seasoned hardwood, the life blood (no wait, that'd be water) of KSW's 1920 Case Traction Engine. We saw spiders beyond number, grubs, snails, slugs, centipedes, millipedes, ants, ants, ants and still more spiders!
»Steam Powered Carousel meeting number two, Tuesday, April 18th, 9pm @ NIMBY.
The first of the steam powered kinetic art projects is getting underway with artist Jamie Vaida at the helm. Jamie and several kinetic artists in collaboration with Kinetic Steam Works are planning the fabrication of a full sized, steam powered carousel. Jamie has some ambitious concepts and we are looking for artists and fabricators that might want to go for a ride. Thanks for coming!
»KSW 1st Steam Up – Saturday April 8th - Photos!
Starting at NIMBY, down Mandela Parkway to the Crucible and back again! Dogs hate the whistle, budget wine drinkers love the whistle, everyone has a cellphone camera, really, everyone.
»Thanks to all that came out to our Second Kinetic Art Meeting in March. We have several Artists on board to collaborate with KSW and we are very excited about some of the ideas. If you would like to join the team of artists, please contact us and we will get you connected.
